Peace Centre
Rights and Humanity will establish a Peace Centre in the Middle East as a permanent base for our work to build bridges of understanding between people in conflict, forge Islamic/Western cooperation and facilitate multi-stakeholder consensus on action to address pressing global issues. Jordan is an ideal location for the Centre. It is playing a critical role in securing a peaceful settlement to the Middle East conflict and achieving solutions to other crises in the region. One possible site would be particularly significant. It is near Madeba, on hills overlooking the Dead Sea, in the region where the Prophet Moses viewed the Holy land.
Background
Rights and Humanity’s work is now needed more than ever as the world faces conflicts of identity and religion with increasing tension over access to food, water and other essential resources. The problems will inevitably get worse unless humanity learns to work together across the divides of nations and beliefs. Our unique multi-faith, multi-cultural approach is ideally suited to addressing these urgent issues. We work with all concerned to find solutions rather than apportion blame. We use the global recognition of human rights and the values shared across faiths and cultures as a common framework for achieving mutual understanding and cooperation.
The establishment of the Peace Centre will build on Rights and Humanity’s achievements over the last 21 years. We have frequently built multi-stakeholder consensus on action to address pressing global problems and have been called upon by the UN and individual governments to assist in resolving political stalemate on controversial issues. We have pioneered innovative methods which employ constructive dialogue to achieve the highest common vision rather than the lowest common denominator. This enables ‘win/win’ solutions where all involved consider that their concerns have been understood, addressed and met.
Aim
To build a residential Peace Centre to facilitate bridges of understanding, mutual respect and cooperation as a foundation for peace in the Middle East and joint action to tackle pressing global challenges.
Rights and Humanity will build an environmentally sound and energy-efficient "green" building to accommodate up to 30 residential guests. We shall host “off-the-record” dialogues involving art and music, guest speakers and visits to sites of religious and historical significance. These targeted gatherings will, for example, bring together:
- Political, business and opinion leaders from Islamic and Western societies to share knowledge and celebrate our different cultural and religious heritage
- Political leaders from the Middle East region with US senators and congressmen and women
- Multi-level groups of Palestinian and Israeli leaders and ordinary citizens building vertical channels of communication and cooperation to complement the horizontal contact that already exists e.g. between Israeli and Palestinian religious leaders and between families of the bereaved on both sides
- Female political, business and community leaders in order to enhance the role of women in working for a peaceful settlement of the Middle East conflict and global peace
- Leaders from around the world to articulate a common understanding of human rights and responsibilities which has contemporary relevance
- Public and private stakeholders to build consensus on solutions to pressing global problems.
Outcome
- Bridges of understanding will be built between people of different faiths, cultures, political viewpoints
- Islamic/Western understanding and cooperation will be strengthened
- The Programme will contribute to establishing peace in the Middle East through dialogue and joint action
- Consensus will be developed on solutions to global problems.
