Cross Cutting

Rights and Humanity integrates a multi-faith, multicultural approach within every aspect of our work. Also cross-cutting within each of our three programmes is a priority concern for realising women’s rights and empowerment and the rights to water and sanitation.

Multi-faith, Multi-cultural approach
Human rights standards have their roots in the philosophies, religions and cultures throughout the world. People worldwide share common needs, aspirations and values which act as a common bond between all faiths and cultures. At a time of growing tensions between faiths in some areas it is vital both to celebrate the richness of our diversity and to emphasise those aspects of human experience which unite us all.

Women’s Rights and Empowerment
Everywhere poverty, violence and AIDS has a woman’s face. The UN estimates that 70% of the 1.2 billion people living in poverty around the world are women. The disadvantaged legal, political, economic and socio-cultural status of women leaves them vulnerable to exploitation, ill-health and violence. Discrimination is a major, if not the major, determinant of preventable morbidity and mortality amongst women.

The Rights to Water and Sanitation

  • 1.1 billion people worldwide do not have access to safe water
  • 2.6 billion people lack access to adequate sanitation.
  • 1.8 million children die each year from preventable diseases caused by unclean water and poor sanitation.
