Challenges and Opportunities

Humanity is facing the critical challenges of:

1.2 billion people living in poverty - the most widespread violation of human rights in the world. Women make up 70% of the world’s poor. AIDS and preventable death and ill-health due to inadequate access to water and sanitation remain critical issues.

Conflicts in the Middle East
and conflicts of identity have devastating impacts for people in the region and global security as a whole

Climate change and environmental deprivation
present an unprecedented global challenge.

These issues are all interlinked and require an holistic response. Poverty provides fertile ground for extremism and conflict. Armed conflict contributes to impoverishment and environmental degradation. The consequences of climate change are felt disproportionately by poor people and countries.

The international community has agreed a number of goals for achieving development, peace and sustainability which indicate a common commitment to tackling these issues.

The question is how?
Rights and Humanity shows how human rights standards and shared responsibilities provide a globally agreed framework for an holistic response. These rights and responsibilities should be at the centre of policy and action of all stakeholders.
