Launch of 'Arts for Human Rights': Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation Gala Dinner, Charity Auction and Awards Ceremony - 14th October 2011.
In her first fundraising event for the charity Bianca Jagger said 'The event brings together two of my great passions: human rights and the arts. The evening will highlight the invaluable role that artists have played in standing for democratic principles, in defence of human rights, civil liberties and freedom of expression.'
As a trustee of the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation, Professor Hausermann, founder and President of Rights and Humanity also attended the event.
The Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation Awards were presented to two inspiring figures for their outstanding contribution to human rights, social justice and the environment at ‘Arts for Human Rights.’ The Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation Award for Courage was presented in absentee to Ai Weiwei, in recognition of his heroic dedication to free speech and democratic principles and the Award for Leadership was presented to Chief Almir Narayamoga Surui, Chief of the Gamebey Clan of the Suruí People of Rondônia in Brazil, over a live link to the Amazonian rainforest, in recognition of his visionary leadership of the Surui people, and his courageous struggle in defence of their ancestral land, in the Amazon.
Hosted by Phillips de Pury, and Sponsored by Swarovski ‘Arts for Human Rights’, the Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation inaugural event raised an astonishing £721,000/ $1,139,067.34 with Jon Snow as master of ceremonies and Simon de Pury as auctioneer who hit the hammer down on some exceptional works.
The top lot of the evening was the Raqib Shaw, An Ode to the Dissolving Silk of Dusk, 2011 which sold for £200,000. Other highlights included the sale of Marc Quinn’s Planet, 2011 which sold for £80,000; and Jason Martin, Frontiere, 2011, which sold for £55,000.
Terence Koh, GOD (Dirty in the Blind, Number 3), 2007, which sold for £35,000; Martin Creed’s, Work No. 1270, 2011 which sold for £24,000, Sylvie Fleury’s neon Shield, 2001-2, which sold for £13,000, and Antony Gormley’s carbon and casein on paper, Matrix with Light, 2009 which sold for £28,000.
